Kara system delivers the Best Sound for Northwest China’s Shaanxi Grand Theater

​The Shaanxi Grand Theater is a performing arts complex that caters to an audience of 2,040 with two balcony levels, a split-level stalls area, and a large, open orchestra pit for orchestral events. Located in Xi'an, an ancient capital city in Shaanxi Province, the theater is a vital cultural center that hosts a variety of musical talents, sophistication, and art. It has emerged as a hub for cultural, industrial, political, and educational activities in the entire central-northwest region of China.

To maintain its status as an international, professional, and comprehensive performing arts complex, the Shaanxi Grand Theater required a sound system that could cater to a broad range of musical genres and meet the high expectations of artists and patrons. The theater's management team opted for the Kara system, a perfect balance between aesthetics, performance, and cost.

The Kara system comprises twelve Kara per side of the proscenium and nine at the center, supplemented by four L-Acoustics SB18. The SB18i is designed to reinforce the low-frequency contour of Kara and configured in a cardioid configuration, significantly reducing low-frequency energy on stage. Two KS28 are stacked on the ground, on the left and right sides of the stage, for additional low-frequency impact, with three KIVAII deployed as outfill. 

For coverage on the first few rows of seating, X8 coaxial point sources are deployed along the stage lip. In configurations where a pit orchestra is present, low-profile 5XT coaxial point sources are fastened along the pit rail. The system exceeded all expectations, delivering the high impact and SPL needed for the most demanding acts while offering exceptional musicality for more subtle program material and more nuanced content.

The Kara system's versatility and musicality impressed Yang Chao, Audio Director of Shaanxi Theater. According to him, Kara is incredible in its versatility and musicality. In addition to its exceptional sound quality, the Kara system's vertical pattern control and consistent frequency response across the venue make it an ideal tool for speech applications. Feedback is no longer an issue, and intelligibility is heard clearly down to the venue's last row.
